They cannot write this letter. You can.

India has drafted new rules for animals used in laboratories. Until 5 November 2026 anyone can object. Ask for independent oversight, protection for community animals, and alternatives to animal experiments, in a letter sent from your own email.

What to ask for

Three changes.

  1. Keep oversight independent.

The draft would let an institution's own ethics committee approve mild and moderate experiments. Ask for outside review and open severity assessments.

  2. Close the gaps in sourcing.

Its exceptions for "stray or feral" animals need scrutiny. Ask for traceable sources, and no capture of community animals.

  3. Make alternatives the priority.

Replacement, reduction and refinement must mean action: enforceable welfare standards, public reporting, and investment in methods without animals.

The draft and the sources

The notification gives 30 days from publication for objections; the last date is 5 November 2026. These are proposals, not final rules, and the Gazette is the authoritative text.
